Clapping Syllable Cards

Des mots à frapper dans les mains syllabe par syllabe, puis à ranger par nombre.

Step by step

  1. Print the picture cards and set out three spots marked 1, 2, 3.
  2. Show how it works once: say "el-e-phant" while clapping each beat, and count: 3!
  3. Let your child draw a card, name it, and say it again while clapping.
  4. Count the claps together and put the card on the matching number spot.
  5. Make a deliberate mistake from time to time and let them joyfully correct you.
  6. Get moving: jump across squares for each syllable, or hunt for 4-syllable words around the house.

What it builds

Clapping out "el-e-phant" helps little ones discover that words are built from chunks. Breaking words down into beats—right after spotting rhymes—is the second big building block for learning to read.
