Sink or Float: Guess and Test
Une bassine, des objets du quotidien, et pour chacun un pari : flotte ou coule ?
Step by step
- Fill a tub with water, put a towel underneath, and line up 8 to 10 varied objects (cork, spoon, apple, coin, small toy).
- Set the golden rule: "first we guess, then we test." If they try to dunk everything at once, gently smile and say: "hold on, make your bet first!"
- For each item, your child calls out "sink" or "float" and places it on that side of the sheet.
- Drop the object in, watch closely what happens, and move it to the column showing the real result.
- At the end, compare the guesses with the results and look closely at the surprises (the big apple floats, the tiny coin sinks!).
- Ask "why do you think that happened?" and welcome every idea without rushing to give THE answer; test again right away if they have a new theory.
What it builds
Guessing before testing is what turns splashy water play into real scientific thinking. Your child learns to make a prediction, test it out, and be totally fine being wrong—great practice for the big "why" stage.
