Scales and Comparisons: Heavier or Lighter?

Des paris sur ce qui est le plus lourd, tranchés par une balance en cintre.

Step by step

  1. Hang two bags from each end of a coat hanger: your scale is ready.
  2. Pick two objects and hold one in each hand—everyone guesses which is heavier.
  3. Cast your votes out loud: once the bets are in, kids are completely hooked.
  4. Place the objects in the bags and watch the hanger tilt.
  5. Try trick items: test a big light cushion against a tiny heavy stone, and enjoy the surprise.
  6. Take it further: rank 4 or 5 objects from lightest to heaviest, or find out how many tokens weigh the same as an apple.

What it builds

You can't see weight just by looking: by guessing and watching the hanger tip, your child discovers that bigger doesn't mean heavier. Guessing wrong, being surprised, and figuring out why is the very heart of scientific thinking.
